FITTING & CARE
A good fit begins
with a clear comparison.
Gather measurements, check the included pieces and keep the care instructions with the costume. The actual garment sets the requirements.
Start with something that fits.
Choose an existing garment that fits well and has a similar purpose. Lay it without stretching the fabric and record the relevant chest or bust width, waist, sleeve, body and leg lengths. State whether a number is a flat measurement or a full circumference, and keep the units consistent. Compare those figures with the actual costume measurements instead of relying only on a size label. Mention any extra layers or performance movement.
Know which pieces are coming.
Request a written list of the clothing and accessories offered. A cap, collar, trousers or garment worn underneath may be separate even if the image shows a complete outfit. Check the list when receiving the costume and keep it for any rental return. Ask for close photographs of existing marks, loose trims or fragile areas, so the condition is understood before use.
Handle the small details carefully.
Support the main body when lifting a costume. Do not pull on a ribbon, pompon, pointed edge or decorative button to move it. Keep trims away from jewellery and rough surfaces that might catch them. Ask how the actual garment should be hung, folded or packed; a long coat and a pleated collar may need different support. Allow space around projecting details during transport.
Use the instructions for that item.
A design photograph cannot tell you whether a material tolerates water, solvents, steam or heat. Obtain garment-specific cleaning guidance, including instructions for the lining and trims. Ask before attempting to remove a mark or pressing a crease. For a hired item, clarify who arranges cleaning and seek agreement before altering a seam, adding a fastening or attaching another accessory.
Set the dates and the return.
Agree the rental period, deposit, delivery or collection, packing and return arrangements before confirming. Establish how cleaning and damage questions will be handled. Keep the agreed instructions with the garment. Sending an inquiry alone does not establish these policies or reserve an item.
